Frameless London wins AV Award

Frameless London – a project that used media player solutions from Hive – took home the award for ‘Themed Entertainment and Attractions Project of the Year’ at the 2023 AV Awards, which was held at London’s Evolution back in November.

The media player giants were honoured alongside Creative Technology and Panasonic Connect Europe for their work on the phenomenal Frameless London project, which blended creative digitised art and cutting-edge technology.

Located at Marble Arch Place, Frameless merged digital adaptations of 40 pieces from significant creative forces, including Klimt, Monet, Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Guests were led through carefully curated rooms, which comprised themes spanning ‘Beyond Reality’, ‘Colour in Motion’, ‘The World Around Us’ and ‘The Art of Abstraction’.

The project used 19 Hive Media Engines all seamlessly synchronised and supported by 4K and 8K media players and augmented by 50 3-Chip DLP Panasonic laser projectors, which helped to deliver 479 million pixels and one million lumens.

“We’re really proud of this project and the AV Award win confirms its success. Hive strives to power one-of-a-kind, ambitious visuals and Framless London is a testament to that.”

HIVE’s media playback solutions helped state-of-the-art Danish Museum Naturkraft create a breath-taking 360º video detailing the oil crisis, the green transition, and the future of Danish energy.

The museum used HIVE’s Player_3 media players to tell the story of West Jutland, where wind farms and turbines champion green emissions.

Created in collaboration with renowned design agency Tinker Imagineers, the immersive dome attraction became a canvas for the innovative work of Dutch mills and how the wind turbines of today began to take shape.

National Museum of Qatar: Dugong

In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, HIVE was selected by exhibition designers Opera in Amsterdam and exhibition fit out contractors PICO in Dubai as their preferred media player for the Dugong Temporary Exhibition in Qatar.

HIVE was used for various applications, including touch screen interactive games in Unreal Engine, HD and 4K video playback on TV monitors and video projectors, and challenging projection mapping exhibits.

The exhibition, featuring 22 Hive Player_2 systems, ran smoothly for eight months.

Special thanks were given to NMoQ, PICO, OPERA, and Pesh for their contributions.

The main attraction for me was the fluidity of 4k video playback and the ease of use through the simple, web-based user interface. The HIVE players are also incredibly compact, with low noise & heat implications which means I can easily hide them within the artworks, and displays being used within the museum.

HIVE and RES were hired by Liverpool Museum to help with the refurbishment of the Aquarium project. While Hive Media Control founders are inspired by the natural world and environment, they understand that keeping animals in captivity is a sensitive issue.

After discussing the Museum’s focus on educating visitors about the planet’s resources, global warming, and humanity’s relationship with the ocean, HIVE decided to participate and even sponsored a film about the environment in hopes of inspiring children to care more for the planet.

After completion of the project, Mannika Dhadwal, Digital Content Lead said “The process from start to finish has been exactly what you would want and need – imaginative, flexible and collaborative. They’ve worked within our budget and have produced world-class animated content that has really amplified the exhibition experience. We’re looking forward to working with them on future projects and couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”

Special thanks to: Liverpool Museum, Mike Bedford & Pesh

HIVE is the most talented and creative company we’ve had the pleasure to work with. Their enthusiasm, ingenuity and energy is infectious, and their advice and technical skills have been invaluable in the refurbishment of the Aquarium. The process from start to finish has been exactly what you would want and need!

Timelines: The power of testimony, representations of landscapes marked by conflict and the legacy of British power and influence globally.

In Timelines, Jananne Al-Ani, a London-based, Iraqi-born artist, reveals a micro landscape in the surface of a highly decorated brass tray that originated in Iraq and is now held in the V&A collection. The tray depicts the events on Armistice Day, 1918, in the Iraqi town of al-Hindiyyah. World War 1 biplanes fly over the river Euphrates which cuts across the centre of the tray, crowds of highly stylised Arab men and women and British soldiers in uniform are shown from a bird’s eye view on either side of the river. Using ultra close-up photographs of the engraved surface and computer animation, Al-Ani transforms the flattened perspective of the scene into a vast and varied landscape.

Alongside this visual journey, a distinctive voice emerges – the artist draws upon interviews with her mother, recalling personal experiences of growing up in Britain as the child of Irish immigrants and living in Iraq through intense social and political change. Her mother’s memories move between these contexts, creating a layered narrative where multiple timelines intersect and overlap.

Timelines is presented across a large-scale curved screen creating an immersive environment in which to encounter these stories. This panoramic presentation, which mimics a 19th century diorama, is made possible by HIVE technology.

The HIVE media player was central to the presentation delivery, providing a solid, dependable, and most importantly, cost-effective platform that helped turn the artist’s vision into a remarkable reality.
